The time has come around again to move seats and for those of us that are doing it for the first time the experience of moving from our comfortable and well-stocked desks into the world of the unknown is a daunting one. Continue reading
Every year the Nottinghamshire Junior Lawyers Division runs an advocacy competition which is open to trainees, paralegals and pupil barristers from across the county. Entrants can choose to make a civil or criminal application and have ten minutes to impress a panel of three judges who gleefully interrupt and ask questions about points of fact or law to put them off their stride. As part of our Professional Skills Course we did an external presentation skills workshop where, much to my mortification, I was filmed doing a presentation and forced to watch it back! After some useful tips and a tasty lunch we felt armed with the right skills to give a great presentation, but knew that we would not need to actually use these skills for ages.
Or so we thought… Continue reading
Mentoring is a very valuable task that both trainees and qualified solicitors can carry out here at Browne Jacobson. It’s fantastic way of getting involved with law and non-law students of all ages and I personally mentor on a range of schemes with both pupils from A-levels right up to those studying on business degrees and the GDL (graduate diploma in law).

Flying solo at your first court hearing is always going to be nerve racking, but especially when you are told by your supervisor “you can’t lose”! Continue reading
The Nottingham office is moving this year from the charming “rabbit-warren” on Castle Gate to swanky new open plan offices near the canal. As part of the preparation for the move the firm has introduced a new “paperless” policy. It will mean a big change but the new policy is a good one with twin benefits of saving space and saving the environment.

The drab, dull and grey month of January rarely offers much in the way of excitement. However, this is not the case at Browne Jacobson, as January brings the firm’s annual party! Continue reading
Perhaps a slightly unusual situation, but I am a trainee seconded into the firm from one of Browne Jacobson’s clients. As I come towards the end of my six months in the firm I can happily report that I have really enjoyed my time here. Continue reading
At Browne Jacobson we are given a good deal of scope when it comes to choosing our seats. For us firsties, we will be starting our second seat at the beginning of March and have just handed in our seat options to HR.

The end of 2011 saw many of the law fairs taking place at universities across the country. Browne Jacobson attended a number of law fairs, including those held at Leicester University, Birmingham University, Nottingham University, Warwick University and Sheffield University.

When I tell people I am training at a large law firm with mainly commercial and insurance clients, I am often asked about the hours I work. I think this is something prospective trainees are concerned about generally, especially as they often have to make decisions on which training contract offer to accept without having actually worked at any of the firms!

What does the team do?
The firm is one of the strongest IP specialists outside of London, and the team has an impressive range of clients and fee earners with a vast range of experience.
The team deals with a wide range of work including:
The team will often work together on projects that require their various areas of expertise.
On 16 November 2011 the Community Action Committee (CAC) held a Community Action Day in No 44, the aim of the day was to let the staff here at BJ’s know just exactly what the firms committee do and what the next few months held in store for the CAC.
Not only was this a day for people to ask questions, see what they could take part in etc but also the final of the CAC Pool Tournament took place. It was hotly contested and the winner took home the rather coveted trophy. There were also tickets for the raffle to be bought and boxes for Operation Christmas child to collect. The work here never stops!

What does the team do?
The team specialises in social care and child and vulnerable adult protection issues. The work covers both litigation and advisory work for public sector bodies. On the litigation side, the team defends local authorities against claims of negligence or ‘failure to remove’ children from abusive home environments. On the advisory side, we assist a range of clients, including public bodies and sporting organisations, in creating appropriate procedures for the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.

What does the team do?
The team advises on various tax matters from Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) for property transactions to share schemes for businesses to VAT.
What type of work does a trainee do?
Calculate SDLT and fill out the SDLT returns based on agreements for lease and the actual leases, then flag up issues with the appropriate fee earner and diarise submission deadlines for payment of the SDLT, filling out EMI forms for share schemes granted and technical research on Stamp duty land tax and other matters!

Bright and early on a Friday morning after a quick bacon sandwich and coffee in No44 the second year trainees rounded up the eager new first years and handed them a rather jaunty Browne Jacobson t-shirt. They’d been told the day before to wear study footwear, old clothes and prepare to get dirty… to say they looked a little concerned was an understatement.
The day was part of the trainee induction programme, but other than to further team bonding it was also part of our Community Action Committee’s programme of projects that we carry out in conjunction with the local council.

Following the completion of this year’s Lex 100 survey, Browne Jacobson have scored a hat-trick by securing eight out of ten rosettes for the third year in a row!
This is a fantastic achievement for the firm since according to research, the Lex 100 survey is one of the most influential resources that students consider when deciding which firm to apply to for a training contract (along side law fairs, the training contract handbook and of course the local night life)!

Well let’s face it, we’ve had a pretty rubbish summer (what’s new). The sun doesn’t seem to want to make a long-lasting appearance after having shown off in Spring. So to be perfectly honest I don’t really mind being at work while people are traipsing around outside with their coats and umbrellas trying to make the most of their ‘time off’. Plus, there are some other benefits about working here in the summer too…
